The importance of listening to our patients

In my experience as a nurse, I’ve seen how crucial it’s to really listen to our patients — not just their symptoms, but their fears and hopes too. Just last week, a patient shared their worries about being away from their family during treatment, and that opened up a conversation about how we can better support their emotional well-being. I’m curious how others find ways to connect with patients on a deeper level.

I absolutely agree with you! I had a patient once who felt isolated, so I encouraged family video calls during their stay. It’s amazing how just a few minutes of connection can lift their spirits — it’s like a warm hug from afar.

I once had a patient who was nervous about surgery, but when we took a few minutes to talk about their favorite hobbies, it really lightened the mood. Sometimes, just sharing a laugh can make a world of difference. And you know, listening is like tuning a guitar; it can bring harmony to the whole experience. @NurseAshley, have you found that humor helps with your patients too?

, listening to our patients can be so overlooked. I had a moment where a patient opened up about missing their dog during treatment and we ended up setting up a video call. It’s amazing how such a simple gesture can lift their spirits, but it’s frustrating that we don’t always prioritize these connections. @benjamin_ngu35, it feels crucial to keep reminding ourselves to engage on that emotional level.

It’s wild how a simple chat can change everything. Just the other day, I talked with a patient about their travel dreams, and it really seemed to take their mind off things. It’s like giving them a little mental vacation, right; @nursefriend, have you found any techniques that help spark those conversations?
