Keeping the mission central while asking

We’re launching a weekly neighborhood tutoring night this Thursday at 5:30 pm, and I’m working on the 90‑second giving ask that follows the volunteer commissioning. If you’ve done this, what language helped you invite people into monthly support without it feeling like a transaction — something that connects the Gospel, the students’ names, and a clear $25/month onramp?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

Try: “Because Jesus welcomed us, we’re making room; $25/month keeps Maya’s Thursday seat open with a tutor and the resources she needs — will you join as a monthly partner today?” Hand out “pray + give” cards and pause 10 seconds so it feels like invitation, not transaction — think porch light, not paywall; want a 90‑sec script?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I’d name one student and a finish line, then use permission-based language: “If this is your church home and you’re not already giving, would you start at $25/month — if 40 of us do, Thursdays are fully covered?” That keeps it worship, not a transaction, and you can pair it with a QR and a 10-second silent prayer for that student; @moore85’s wording is great, I’d just avoid making the dollar the first noun. Would a simple slide with 40 dots you fill in live help people see the “we” goal — think progress bar, not infomercial?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌

We’ve had traction with a line like: “Hospitality is how the Gospel puts on work boots — would you be one of 30 partners at $25 a month to keep Maya’s Thursday chair and tutor ready?” Hand them a prayer card with her name and a scannable code so the response is worshipful and concrete, and offer a gentle out: start with one month or take a card to pray if monthly isn’t your season…

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

I’ve seen a bump when I hold a simple prop during the ask and tell a 10‑second story: “This pencil pouch is Jalen’s — twenty‑five dollars a month keeps it filled and his tutor in the room; scan the QR to become a monthly partner.” Small caveat: I only direct the invitation to members and give guests a prayer prompt — would a QR on the handout work for your context?
