Faith-informed CEUs for bedside nurses

Has anyone found accredited CE that weaves spiritual assessment and prayer into evidence-based bedside care? I’m a night-shift RN on oncology at Mercy Covenant, and I can give about 2 hours on Thursday evenings; looking for something ANCC-approved that also speaks to burnout, lament, and hope with patients and families. Practical, compassionate training over theory would really help me serve our patients more holistically.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

I’ve had the best fit with Journal of Christian Nursing CE via Lippincott — ANCC-approved, with modules that walk through FICA/HOPE and gentle prayer language — and I’d do one 1–2 hr piece after my Thursday shift, then try one bedside question like “what helps you hold hope tonight?” with consent; catalog’s here: CEConnection for Nursing (search Journal of Christian Nursing)… Would article-based CE work for you, or do you need live?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

Building on @gonzalez96, try ONS’s “Spiritual Care in Oncology” micro-course (ANCC‑accredited, about 1.5–2 hours) — it covers FICA/HOPE, communication around offering prayer, plus boundary‑setting; here’s the link: https://www.ons.org/education/online-courses. Would a 90‑minute module fit your Thursday slot?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

And hPNA University’s on‑demand spiritual care module (ANCC credit, about 1.5–2 hours) gave me a practical consent line to rehearse before night rounds — “If it would be supportive, I can offer a brief prayer” — and the cases stay close to oncology; https://university.hpna.org. If you want something more overtly Christian, the Spiritual Care Association’s nurse courses fit too, but you may need to split them over two evenings.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

Quick example: ELNEC’s Oncology online module on culture/faith (ANCC credit, about 75–90 minutes) paired with their self‑care/debrief lesson makes a solid Thursday block — here’s the hub: End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), though some units run a bit long. On nights I practice one line before I badge in: “Some patients appreciate prayer — would you like me to include that while I’m here?” Would your educator sign off on a palliative‑branded option if it meets the ANCC requirement?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

Check out Hospice Foundation of America’s on‑demand CE on religion/meaning at end of life (ANCC credit) and their short clinician self‑care session — together they fit an evening slot and stay practical, like a pocket guide, not a textbook: https://hospicefoundation.org/Professionals/CEs. I use, “Would a brief prayer be welcome, or would you prefer I call the chaplain?” as a simple consent line. Quick caveat: confirm your unit’s policy on initiating prayer; do you need oncology‑specific content or is palliative‑focused okay?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

Quick example from my unit: I rehearse a two-step consent before any prayer — ‘Would it help if I offered a brief prayer, or would you prefer a quiet moment?’ — then offer it during vitals so it feels routine and easy to decline. For a compact training that maps to bedside workflow, the ONS piece on addressing spiritual distress plus their compassion fatigue microlearning fit in an evening slot: https://www.ons.org/education/online-courses; would palliative-focused content work for you too?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

But given your 2 hours on Thursdays, pair two Journal of Christian Nursing CE articles on NursingCenter — one on FICA-based spiritual assessment/prayer and one on compassion fatigue/resilience — and you’re still within your window; they’re offered through Lippincott, which meets ANCC standards. I like @michael7935’s consent idea, and JCN’s FICA piece gives sample phrases you can drop into a smart phrase for charting. Link: CEConnection for Nursing — would that work on nights at Mercy Covenant?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

It drives me nuts how scattered this is, but CEUfast’s “Spirituality in Health Care” module folds FICA and brief bedside prayer into concrete cases, and they’re an accredited provider for nursing contact hours: https://ceufast.com/course/spirituality. It runs about 2 hours, so it fits your “2 hours on Thursday evenings” window; I did it after nights and then debriefed one oncology case around lament/hope with a chaplain. Small caveat: check your unit’s prayer policy, and if you want deeper oncology nuance, the ELNEC online palliative modules hit spiritual distress well.
